James Abercrombie letter to Saumel Jarvis, 1813 April 28.

Abercrombie has received the prospectus for Jarvis's proposed American edition of Griesbach's Greek Testament. He doubts that Jarvis will obtain many subscribers due to the ignorance and poverty of American clergy but will subscribe himself. He offers to send a copy of Erasmus's 1519 Greek and Latin Parallel New Testament for comparison with a contested point in 1st John. Abercrombie himself intends to publish the works of Samuel Johnson but the "depressing nature of these iron times" makes literary endeavors difficult as the "Country continues to groan under the stupid, wicked, and destructive administration of Madison and his pestiferous myrmidons." He asks Jarvis's opinion of his publishing venture, notes that booksellers are not reprinting volumes by others as they wait for his edition which will have plates by the finest artists. He intends to publish Johnson chronologically and closes with thanks for an invitation. The address leaf contains a well preserved red wax seal depicting Hercules battling the Hydra.
